Blanket Appeal for Vanuatu

In the period following Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu the Tolmie Uniting Church congregation has established a contact with Pastor Eddie Satungia who is working and caring for people in Port Vila and outlying areas.

During a recent visit to Vanuatu we discovered first hand that after Cyclone Pam a lot of aid did not reach the people who need it desperately. A lot of houses are not rebuilt and, especially on the islands, people are living in extreme poverty.  We asked the locals what would be most needed at this stage.  They told us that one of the items desperately needed would be bedding material like blankets or doonas. You would not expect that these items would be required in a tropical climate, but during the winter season the night temperature can drop to about 13 degrees, which is experienced as very cold to the Vanuatan people.

So we are planning to ship a pallet load of blankets to Vanuatu, but need your help to find us the blankets. Any blankets or doonas (with cover) in reasonably good condition will be very welcome. You can drop off your donations at the Tolmie Uniting church which will be open on Saturday 13 August from 10 am until 1.00 pm.  Alternatively, you can give us a call and we can organise a pick up or drop off somewhere else.   Pastor Eddie has people to assist him in processing the delivery on arrival, so we can be sure that what we send will reach people who need it.

On behalf of the people of Vanuatu we thank you in advance for your contribution!

Remembering the Past & Present in Tolmie

“Friends of St Josephs” is a small group of dedicated people who have been renovating the Catholic church in Tolmie.  There have been many improvements outside and new carpet has now been installed inside.

The latest venture is to place a square of paver bricks in front of the main entrance.  This will serve as a permenant feature in “Remembering Past and Present residents of Tolmie and District”.  This memorial is open to all who do live or have lived in this area, regardless of your religious denomination or belief.  People have the oppotunity to purchase a paver upon which a family name and date of residence will be printed.  The cut off time for applications is 1st September, 2016.

Many past residents have been contacted, but the group is also interested in those who currently live in the district.  For further information and forms, please contact Zaldah on 5775 2571 or Val 5775 1072.

Tolmie’s History – stories needed

The Tolmie Mechanics Institute is currently in the process of compiling a new book covering Tolmie’s history.  This new book is part of the Community Planning process which nominated the preserving of Tolmie’s history as a key element.

Organisers are asking for stories about Tolmie families who have played an important role in the history of Tolmie – through perhaps a pioneering past, their longevity in Tolmie, their involvement in Tolmie’s sporting clubs, CFA, Sports or the timber/agriculture industry etc.  Articles may also include Tolmie’s more recent “past” to ensure the book will include current times.

If you can assist in any way with information or a story for consideration please contact Linda Terry on 5776 2113 or linda.gai.terry@gmail.com .

Volunteers needed for 130th Tolmie Sports

The 130th Tolmie Sports will be held on Saturday 13th February 2016 at the Tolmie Recreation Reserve.  An integral part of successfully running the sports is the fantastic support of volunteers on the day.  If you are interested in volunteering on Sports day it would be greatly appreciated.  Generally volunteer shifts run for 2 to 3 hours so there is still plenty of time to relax and enjoy everything the sports has to offer.

To register an interest in volunteering, please contact Meg on 5776 2178 or roballan@hotkey.net.au .
